Genoa, Nevada

Nevada's first settlement, a historic small town at the foot of the Sierra in the Carson Valley.

Small-Town History With the Sierra Out Your Window

Some buyers tell me they want the opposite of a subdivision: a real small town with history, quiet streets, and the mountains right behind the house. When I hear that, Genoa is one of the first places I mention.

Genoa is tucked right up against the mountains on the west side of the Carson Valley, just below Kingsbury Grade, the road up to Lake Tahoe. It is Nevada's first settlement, founded as Mormon Station in 1851, a trading post for travelers on the California Trail.

Life in Genoa

What I love most about Genoa is how it feels. It has beautiful old historic buildings and little boutique shops you can walk between. Once a year the town holds the Candy Dance in the park: vendors set up with arts and crafts to shop, and musicians play right there in the park. It is a lot of fun to go to.

Mormon Station State Historic Park sits right in town, with a reconstruction of the original trading post. The Genoa Bar and Saloon, open since 1853, is the oldest bar in Nevada. Genoa also served as the Douglas County seat for more than 50 years.

Buying or Selling in Genoa

Homes here range from historic properties in town to larger homes and acreage along the foot of the mountains, so pricing depends heavily on the specific property. I will walk you through current sales for any home you are considering, and if you are selling, I bring the same full marketing process I use across Reno.

It is a small town, a little tucked away, and yet you are close to Carson City, Gardnerville and Minden. If you want to live down in the valley and still be close to Lake Tahoe, Genoa is definitely an option. Moving from California? See relocating to northern Nevada, and see every area I serve.
