If you’re thinking about moving to Reno, Southwest Reno is one of the areas that comes up over and over again.

And for good reason.

A lot of buyers I work with are drawn to this part of town because of the lifestyle. You get the mountains, the views, and the convenience, all in one place.

What Buyers Love About Southwest Reno

The biggest thing people notice right away is how close everything is.

You’re right at the base of the mountains, which means easy access to hiking, skiing, and being outdoors. Galena Creek is close by if you like to hike, and you’re not far from Mount Rose Ski Resort or Diamond Peak.

If you like getting up to Lake Tahoe, you can be in Incline Village in about 30 minutes. Sand Harbor and Tahoe City are also easy day trips.

There’s also a lot to do without ever getting on the freeway.

You’ve got The Summit for high-end shopping, along with grocery stores like Raley’s One and Trader Joe’s nearby. Most buyers really like that convenience.

If you work in Carson City, this is also a great location. The commute is straightforward and much easier than coming from other parts of Reno.

And then there are the views.

Depending on where you are, you can have mountain views, valley views, or even a more wooded setting. That’s one of the things that makes Southwest Reno different. You can really choose the environment that fits how you want to live.

What Buyers Don’t Love

No area is perfect, and Southwest Reno has a few things to be aware of.

If you’re in the Damonte Ranch area, it can get congested. Traffic can slow things down, especially during peak times, and getting to the freeway can take a little longer.

If you’re looking at homes along Mount Rose Highway, noise can be a factor. That’s something I always point out to buyers. If you want a quieter setting, it’s worth looking a little farther off the highway.

What Homes Are Like in Southwest Reno

This is where Southwest Reno really stands out.

There’s a wide range of homes, and each neighborhood has its own feel.

You’ll find:

• newer tract homes, like Toll Brothers communities, which tend to have smaller lots

• custom homes with larger lots and more space

• older established neighborhoods with mature landscaping

If you’re someone who wants more privacy and space, I usually suggest looking at the custom homes or older areas where the lots are bigger.

If you prefer something newer and more low maintenance, the newer communities might be a better fit.

It really comes down to what you’re looking for.

Different Lifestyles Within Southwest Reno

One of the biggest misconceptions is that Southwest Reno is all the same.

It’s not.

You can choose:

That’s why I always tell buyers to spend time in a few different neighborhoods before deciding.
